While I was taking my mom out to grab some ice cream I saw a 1st generation BMW X6 in the parking lot. I thought to myself, “What a great opportunity to bring up the subject of abortions with mother!” So I asked her what she thought of that BMW SUV. She looked around trying to figure out which of the three cars I was talking about. I said that big BMW with the sloping rear end. She replied, “the sedan?!”
We were driving up to it now in my Grand Cherokee and I pulled up near it and asked, “How do you see that as a sedan, its the same size as the Jeep?” She completely discredited that statement, letting me know that the X6 we were currently staring directly at was much smaller than the WK2. She then stated that it was a “very cute car .”
Perceptions, Oppo.
* Full disclosure, I am very attracted to the first generation X6. Don’t care for the second gen and am not fond of the GLE Lift-UV. On a separate note, since my mother is always deserving of the royal treatment, naturally I took her to the only frozen confectionery fit for a matriach...Diary Queen.

I think everyone forgets how ridiculously incredible the X6M is. What’s sad is the fact that after the 2-Series the X6 is the next best driving BMW model, even besting the Cayenne Turbo S. Jaguar has something similar going on with the F-Pace actually. They even mentioned that the order of athleticism from least (which is still atheletic) to most goes XJ, XF, XE, F-Pace, then F-Type. Crazy!

The X6M is indeed batsh*t. In my mind, if Jaguar comes close to doing what BMW does with the “sedan” we speak of, they've done a wonderful job.

Sounds like the mind wobbling is hereditary.

That made me man-squeek since I wasn’t quick enough to completely suppress that laugh in time!

You know what’s better than an X6M? An X5M that drives exactly the same but has room in the back for cargo and/or passengers above 5'4".

The X6 does look a bit smaller than it actually is, but it’s way to tall to be called a car.
That said, my parents both think that the Porsche Panamera is a station wagon. Unfortunately, my dad doesn’t like station wagons and refuses to even look at a Panamera for himself due to this. I brought them with me to look at an A7 when I got my last car and that was referred to as a “wagon” as well. Apparently the Model S is a sedan though, according to them.

Actually the X6M has some differences in the chassis and overall setup. The differences really are like an M3 vs. M4. One is tuned more for daily use while the other, understanding the sacrifice of utility, places focus on sharper response and turn-in, more stability due to the wider track, lower stance, and flatter body contol, and so on. Basically the X6M drives like the X5M with a secondary performance pack.

Oddly my father adores the X6. I have to say the new X4 works MUCH better.

Oh shit, she’s right. It’s the glorified evolution of this!
I still want one though, an M50d version please

I checked the suspension part numbers. They’re identical.
Front shocks & springs: X5 M , X6 M
Here are the BMW USA spec pages: X5 M , X6 M
They have the same 115.5" wheelbase, and same front track of 65.6", but the X6 M does have a wider 67.2" rear track. The X6 M is 1.1" longer. The X5 M is 1.1" taller. The X5 M weighs 5260 lbs vs. 5185 lbs for the X6 M.
These differences are, at most, subtle. The overall dimensions, except for the swoopy roofline on the X6, are nearly identical.
I mean, I drive a stupid impractical BMW coupe instead of the more practical sedan with which it shares a platform, because I think the coupe looks better, so it’s a bit silly for me to be pointing this out.
But to me, the difference is the whole point of the X5 M is “hey look at this bigass wagon that can haul a bunch of shit while it hauls ass,” and chopping the off the back half of the thing in the name of style (well, someone’s idea of style) kills the practicality part of the equation, and really that idea of style looks stupid.
We could delude ourselves into believing that either the X5 M or X6 M have some kind of foul weather ability, but their extra wide summer tires render them useless without a set of winter wheels and tires.

Now this is awesome info, thank you! So it is just a suit difference. Well that’s so boring if there aren’t differences in the kinematics. Now I’m doubtful there are adjustments made to the air suspension, roll stabilization system, or the electronically controlled dampers. Its probably plug and play with both variants and marketing is handling the placebo. Sad day, I was always under the impression BMW was more opportunistic when it came to increased performance between all models.
